Herzing University has worked diligently to distribute the funding to impacted, eligible students in a timely manner and in accordance to the CARES Act and subsequent implementation guidance.

Herzing University signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement for the Student Grant portion of Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act on 4/14/2020. That Certification and Agreement confirmed Herzing University’s intent to use no less than 50 percent of the funds the university receives under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

On 4/24/2020 the U.S. Department of Education first made funds available for Herzing University to draw down, in the amount of $2,164,417.00 (50% of the funds the allocated to the university under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act). Through the draw down process, Herzing University received the $2,164,417.00 on 4/28/2020.

As of the date of this public notice 07/08/2020, Herzing University has distributed 1,839 CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grants in the amount of $1,821,000.00 to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

Herzing University estimates that as of 3/13/2020, 6268 Herzing University students were eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act. As a result of regulatory guidance from the US Department of Education (found here), 3647 of those students are not eligible due to attending “Exclusively in an Online Program”, therefore 2621 students are eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

As of the date of this public notice 7/8/2020 1,839 Herzing University students have received a CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grant under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

Herzing University used the following methods to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act:

Eligible students are students that have experienced a financial emergency related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus, and that meet all eligibility criteria outlined by the U.S. Department of Education; including bring enrolled in a ground-based or hybrid program as of 3/13/2020 and meeting all eligibility requirements of Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

Eligible students are automatically awarded or may apply for grant funding based on their Expected Family Contribution (EFC) according to their 2019-2020 FAFSA:

• Eligible students with an EFC of 5576 or lower on a valid 19-20 ISIR are automatically awarded a $1,000 HEERF Grant to cover technology costs incurred as a result of the transition from ground campus coursework to distance education.
• Eligible students with an EFC of 5577 or higher on a valid 19-20 ISIR or who were not otherwise auto-eligible are eligible to apply for a HEERF Grant to cover technology costs incurred as a result of the transition from ground campus coursework to distance education. Students who applied prior to 6/1/2020 were eligible for a $1,000 HEERF Grant (matching the amount issued to the auto-eligible students). Students who applied on or after 6/1/2020 are eligible for up to a $1,000 HEERF Grant depending on the level need listed on their application.

*The EFC of 5576 is the US Department of Education cutoff to receive the Federal Pell Grant, and therefore was the defining factor Herzing University used to determine automatic financial need.

• Beginning April 23, 2020 students were notified of HEERF funding available via the Herzing University website as well as individualized email communications.
• Beginning May 8, 2020 auto-eligible students (eligible students with a 2019-2020 EFC of 5576 or less) were notified of HEERF funding availability via email communication which included all program details.
• On June 23, 2020 students who are eligible to apply but had not yet applied for HEERF funding were notified of HEERF funding available via email communication which included the required application.

• had previously received an award, and
• were actively attending in the Fall 2020 semester as of the date of disbursement of funding.

Herzing University provided the following information to students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants.

• Beginning April 23, 2020 students were notified of HEERF funding available via the Herzing University website as well as individualized email communications.

As of the date of this public notice 03/30/2021 1,940 Herzing University students have received a CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grant under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

Herzing University used the following methods to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act:

Eligible students are students that have experienced a financial emergency related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus, and that meet all eligibility criteria outlined by the U.S. Department of Education; including bring enrolled in a ground-based or hybrid program as of 3/13/2020 and meeting all eligibility requirements of Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

Eligible students are automatically awarded or may apply for grant funding by September 18, 2020 based on their Expected Family Contribution (EFC) according to their 2019-2020 FAFSA:

• Eligible students with an EFC of 5576* or lower on a valid 19-20 ISIR are automatically awarded a $1,000 HEERF Grant to cover technology costs incurred as a result of the transition from ground campus coursework to distance education.
• Eligible students with an EFC of 5577* or higher on a valid 19-20 ISIR or who were not otherwise auto-eligible are eligible to apply for a HEERF Grant to cover technology costs incurred as a result of the transition from ground campus coursework to distance education.
  • Students who applied prior to 6/1/2020 were eligible for a $1,000 HEERF Grant (matching the amount issued to the auto-eligible students).
  • Students who applied on or after 6/1/2020 through 9/18/2020 are eligible for up to a $1,000 HEERF Grant depending on the level need listed on their application. 

*The EFC of 5576 is the US Department of Education cutoff to receive the Federal Pell Grant, and therefore was the defining factor Herzing University used to determine automatic financial need.

To further assist students who incurred expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus pandemic and the corresponding transition of ground campus coursework to distance education and ensure HEERF Emergency Financial Aid Grants are made available to students as quickly as possible, Herzing University awarded an additional $400 in HEERF funds to all eligible students who met the following criteria:

• had previously received an award, and
• were actively attending in the Fall 2020 semester as of the date of disbursement of funding.

Herzing University provided the following information to students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants.

• Beginning April 23, 2020 students were notified of HEERF funding available via the Herzing University website as well as individualized email communications.
• Beginning May 8, 2020 auto-eligible students (eligible students with a 2019-2020 EFC of 5576 or less) were notified of HEERF funding availability via email communication which included all program details.
• On June 23, 2020 students who are eligible to apply but had not yet applied for HEERF funding were notified of HEERF funding available via email communication which included the required application.
• On September 14, 2020 students who are eligible to apply but had not yet applied for HEERF funding were notified of HEERF funding available and deadline of September 18, 2020 to apply for funding via email communication.
• On September 22, 2020 students who were auto-eligible for a subsequent disbursement of HEERF funding were notified via email communication.
