Dr. Paula Pitts
I am Dr. Paula Pitts, honored to serve as the Department Chair for Online Prelicensure Nursing. My journey in higher education spans 13 years, and I am passionately committed to shaping the next generation of nursing professionals. With roots in Tennessee and now living in Florida, I bring 24 years of dedicated nursing experience across dynamic settings including the Emergency Department, Cardiovascular Units, Medical Surgical Units, Neurology, and Orthopedics.
What inspired you to become a nurse?
As a child, I was often sick, and I quickly noticed how nurses cared for me and made me feel better. At a young age, I decided I wanted to care for and impact the lives of others during challenging times in the same way my nurses had helped me.
What is a powerful moment that has stayed with you through your nursing career?
Early in my career, I cared for a young adult who had suffered a massive stroke and was told the chances of recovery were slim. For weeks, I watched the patient miraculously regain the ability to breathe on her own, speak, eat, and walk with the assistance and treatment of the healthcare team. The entire care team was in tears on the day the patient was discharged as we watched her walk about the hospital unit on her own, a living testament to the power of resilience and hope. Before leaving, the patient took the time to personally thank every individual who was instrumental in her care.
What is one piece of advice that you wish to share with nursing students?
My advice for nursing students is to take one day at a time. Each day that passes, you are one day closer to achieving your goal. In the end, it will all be worth it. Although you might feel life and time are passing you by, the sacrifice will lead to a long and rewarding career. Never forget your "why" and celebrate all of your successes along the way, no matter how big or small.
