The Value of Mock Interviews (And How to Perfect Them)

Mock interviews are an optimal way to prepare for a real job interview., When you conduct a practice interview, you’re putting yourself in a situation that mirrors the feeling of an actual job interview. It provides job seekers an opportunity to practice, receive feedback and improve their skills. A mock interview also helps you develop interview strategies, enhance your communication skills, answer challenging questions, and ease the nerves that many experiences before an actual job interview.

Once an interview is secured, it’s time to focus on giving the best interview possible. Strong interviewees answer questions professionally, concisely, and thoroughly. Make sure to fully demonstrate your expertise and highlight the value you would bring to the team. Perfecting a Career Ready interview takes time, so to be fully prepared for every interview, utilize the Interview Training Simulator which is a part of the Herzing University Career Center in Canvas.

Treat your mock interview as if it were an actual interview. Prepare for the interview just as you would for an interview with a hiring manager.

To have a successful interview (mock or real), be sure to take note of the following:

  • Arrive five minutes early
  • Bring an updated resume and any other necessary materials
  • Bring a notebook to take notes
  • Dress appropriately (whether in-person or virtual)
  • Remain positive and be energetic in your responses
  • Maintain appropriate eye contact
  • Demonstrate professionalism
  • Test your technology in advance if you are participating in a video interview
  • Research the company – review the potential employer’s website and social media posts, and familiarize yourself with the company’s mission and value statements

A mock interview allows you to prepare for potential questions and form thoughtful responses that align with your competencies and qualifications. Consider integrating the STAR method to give the interviewer real examples of your experiences:

  • Situation: Explain the context for what was happening at the time you are discussing
  • Task: Explain your role in the situation
  • Action: Describe your action in detail
  • Result: Explain the results of your actions

When it comes to interviewing, the expression “practice makes perfect” couldn’t be truer. Take advantage of mock interviewing opportunities even if you think your skills are proficient. It is important to be open to areas of growth, especially when it comes to making an immense first impression on a prospective employer.

Another essential part of the interview process is preparing questions to ask your interviewer. An interview isn’t just one-sided. You should utilize the opportunity to see if you could see yourself enjoying this potential new job. Plus, asking questions demonstrates preparedness, attentiveness and professionalism. Think about what aspects of a new job and new company are most important to you and formulate some questions to ask at the end of the interview.

Lastly, be confident in yourself and your value. What makes YOU a unique candidate!? By projecting confidence and belief that you’re the best candidate and most qualified for the job, you’re already setting yourself up for success. When you feel confident, that comes across in the interview. Remember — you’ve got this!
