What exactly is a practicum, and why is it such an essential part of learning?

What is a Practicum?

In the simplest terms, a practicum is a supervised, practical application of your field of study. Often a mandatory component of professional degree programs, the purpose of a practicum is for students to gain hands-on, real-world experience in classroom theory and skills training.

Unlike traditional internships, practicums are specifically designed to connect academic learning with professional practice. Practicums also are typically more structured and closely monitored by the academic institution and the host organization, ensuring that participation is both meaningful and educational.

Practicum 101

Participating in a practicum is an exciting blend of coursework and real-world learning. You’ll dive into a curriculum that covers key competencies in your field while gaining hands-on opportunities to put that knowledge to work. Your assignments, discussions and field work are all designed to create a seamless, integrative experience.

When you’re in the field, your main job will be shadowing. But don’t worry–you won’t be doing it alone! You’ll have a mentor or supervisor who is an experienced professional, guiding you every step of the way. They’ll help you apply your coursework and skills training correctly and ensure you stay on track with your course goals and objectives.

For example, if you’re in a nursing clinical practicum, you’ll work in an acute care setting, such as a clinic or hospital, under the supervision of a qualified instructor who works at the organization. If you’re doing a social work practicum—often called field education—you might find yourself in a school, mental health clinic, senior center or other community and government agencies, supervised by a social work professional.

At Herzing University, most practicum students will meet with their field instructor weekly and submit weekly communication forms to support successful learning. Plus, the Director of Field Education is available for one-on-one support throughout your journey.

How to Find Your Perfect Practicum

All students must complete an 8-week practicum readiness training. During this time, you’ll meet with the Director of Field Education to discuss your career goals and interests. Then, you’ll identify three local agencies or organizations that could be a great fit for your field practicum placement. Whether you attend class on campus or are fully online, finding a nearby placement is essential for building a network where you plan to start your career. 

Once you’ve identified potential agencies and organizations for placement, the Director will provide hands-on support throughout the application and interview process, making sure everything is set for the following semester.
