Paying it Forward: How One Alumni-Turned-Faculty is Shaping the Next Healthcare Workforce

At Herzing University, our faculty take pride in their role as nurturers, preparing our students to take flight and flourish in the world. Just like a bird meticulously tends to her chicks, we witness countless students grow under our guidance, until they are ready to spread their wings and explore new horizons and impact their communities as healthcare workers, nurses, business leaders, and IT professionals.

But now more than ever, we are witnessing an increasing number of Herzing graduates return to the familiar "nest" they once called home, eager to share their knowledge and help a new generation of students. Their commitment to their alma mater is a testament to the strong bonds forged during their time as a student.

This was the case for Jamice Glass, who graduated from Herzing’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in 2018. After graduating, Jamice had the opportunity to return to Herzing as a nurse educator.

As a student, what stood out to you about Herzing?

Jamice: When I transferred to Herzing from a larger institution, I was pleasantly surprised by the sense of family and community. At Herzing, I didn't feel like just another number. I had the opportunity to build relationships with faculty and staff, getting to know each of them personally. The available resources were comprehensive, and Herzing genuinely cared about preparing students for their future endeavors, closely following their accomplishments and supporting their growth.

How did you transition from Herzing graduate to faculty member?

Jamice: After I graduated, I stayed connected to Herzing through the nursing advisory board meetings and attended Alumni events; after so many occasions, I was asked by the President, Dean, and Program Chair when I planned to come back and teach. I was nervous to teach, so I shied away as long as I could, but they always had open arms and encouragement for me, which meant a lot. Returning was one of the best things I have done in my career and positioned me for long-term success by doing what I love alongside people who share my passion.

How did your education at Herzing prepare you for your current role as an educator?

Jamice: Herzing University played a vital role in preparing me for my nursing career, equipping me with not only the necessary resources to develop my skills but also the ability to think swiftly and critically. These essential abilities were instrumental in securing my first nursing position in an intensive care unit, where split-second decisions and analytical thinking are crucial.

Can you share one moment since returning to teach at Herzing that let you know this was what you were meant to do? Why was that moment so meaningful?

Jamice: I don’t think I can narrow it down to one moment; I have several. Every time I receive a phone call, a text, or an email from a past student who informs me of their progress as a nurse and tells me I made a huge impact in their life, I feel rewarded. Walking into work and seeing my students return for higher education because I told them they could do it is something that constantly reminds me that I am making a difference. It is worth it for me to develop my skills as an instructor because it leads to me being able to do more for my students and for them to then do greater service for their patients. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience.

What advice would you give to current or prospective students considering Herzing?

Jamice: If you are ready to reach your goals, then Herzing University is the best place for you. With its dynamic and fast-paced environment, Herzing is the perfect place for ambitious individuals who are committed to bettering themselves and their communities. Here, you'll find a plethora of resources ready to support you.
