In today’s rapidly evolving world, educational opportunities are expanding in exciting new ways. One trend is the rising demand in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. There is a rise of STEM-designated degree programs in higher education, which is opening doors for both domestic and international students. But what exactly does this designation mean, and how is it changing the landscape of education?

What Are STEM-Designated Degree Programs?

STEM-designated degree program is an academic program that falls under one or more of the approved categories from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for its focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). STEM fields are not just about studying these subjects but also about equipping students with the technical skills and problem-solving abilities necessary for modern industries.

What makes these degrees even more appealing is their rigorous approach. Compared to non-STEM programs, STEM-designated degrees often include a higher level of quantitative analysis and technical complexity, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for careers that require advanced skills and knowledge. This can range from software development and engineering to research and healthcare.

For international students, one of the key advantages of STEM-designated programs is the opportunity to work in the United States after graduation. Thanks to the U.S. government’s STEM OPT (Optional Practical Training) extension, international students with a STEM degree can work for up to three years without needing employer sponsorship. This allows graduates to gain valuable work experience in the U.S. before pursuing longer-term employment options.

STEM-designated degrees are offered at various academic levels, from bachelor’s to master’s and even doctoral programs, providing numerous opportunities for students to advance their education and careers.

The Shift Toward Flexible, Technology-Driven Learning

As we move further into the 21st century, technology impacts not only what types of programs are offered but also how they are delivered. The rise of hybrid and online learning has revolutionized education, offering students more flexibility than ever before.

Fortunately, Herzing has already adapted to this trend. Herzing University has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for 13 consecutive years for its high-quality online programs. For example, Herzing’s Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner degree allows nurses to continue their education while balancing work and family commitments. This ability to access education remotely makes it easier for students to pursue advanced degrees without the constraints of a traditional, in-person classroom setting.

In addition to flexibility, technology has expanded the opportunities for communication and collaboration in ways we could have only imagined in the past. Traditional classrooms were once limited to a single location with students only able to collaborate with others in the same physical space. Today, students from all around the world can connect easily through the comfort of their desktop computers. Platforms and tools like Google DocsZoom and other digital platforms make it easy to work on projects simultaneously while not being physically present.

Evolving Roles of Teachers and Learners

As technology continues to reshape the educational landscape, the roles of both teachers and students are evolving. In the past, classrooms were centered around the teacher as the "sage on the stage," the primary source of information. This traditional model still exists today in many classrooms, but technology has shifted the dynamic, enabling teachers to take on the role of the "guide on the side" meaning that they serve more as someone to provide direction rather than serve as the end-all-be-all for all learning information.

In this new model, students are no longer passive recipients of knowledge. Instead, they take a more active role in their learning, using technology to access information, engage with content and collaborate with others. This shift empowers students to become more independent and self-directed learners. These are skills that are crucial for success in any workforce.

To accommodate this shift, schools and universities are redesigning learning spaces to foster greater interaction, collaboration, and the use of technology. The physical layout of classrooms is being reimagined to support small group work and hands-on learning, making the learning environment more conducive to the needs of modern students.

With flexible learning options, including online and hybrid formats, Herzing enables students to pursue advanced degrees while balancing work and life commitments. As education continues to evolve, Herzing University remains at the forefront of integrating technology and innovative learning methods, empowering students to engage in collaborative, interactive and personalized education that prepares them for success in the global workforce.
