I love computers and writing code is special to me, so I chose software development as my career path. During my search for a school, I found Herzing’s Online Division, and after some research, I decided that it was the right choice for what I wanted to do.
Entering my program, I was afraid that there would be a lot of writing and I would hate it. Well, there WAS a lot of writing, but it surprisingly turned out to be a lot of fun! Many of the writing prompts made sense to me or were about topics I was interested in, which made the work easier.
Due to the nature of learning remotely, you are essentially responsible for managing your time and completing the work all on your own. As such, the hardest challenge that I faced was pacing myself properly. I found that it helped me to make a schedule at the beginning of every week of what I would be learning and working on for each day.
Thankfully, I also had some outside help from Herzing staff! Rachel helped me with my resume and provided great advice for interviews while Alex helped me with any questions or problems I had during my journey.
Of all my classes, I would say that my Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) courses and Professional Development courses all helped me prepare for my career the most. My OOP courses taught me the core foundations I needed to write structured programs. Professional Development, on the other hand, helped me learn techniques and strategies for getting a job and presenting myself properly.
My entire time at Herzing flew by so quickly and I can't believe it’s already done! It’s only been a year and a half of learning and I've learned so much about so many different aspects of this field. I’m ready to start finding some great opportunities while simultaneously building a portfolio of my work!
