Alumni Spotlight
No one achieves success entirely alone. We all rely on people and places to support us along our journey. Tara Magee is no different. With the support of flexible programs and valuable mentorship, Tara’s journey reflects perseverance, resourcefulness and the power of key resources.
Her career began in clinical healthcare roles before shifting to administrative work. As she gained experience, Tara realized she needed to further her education to align with her evolving career ambitions. This pursuit led her to project management. “I’ve worked in healthcare for over 20 years, starting as a medical assistant and surgical tech,” Tara recalled. “To continue to advance, I needed more education to back up my on-the-job skills. Beginning in 2008, I made the extra effort to return to school to improve my skills and ability to stay at the forefront of my field.”
In 2011, Tara earned her bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration from Herzing University, marking a pivotal moment in her career. “That degree opened doors for me,” she said. “It led me into project management, where I’ve been thriving ever since.”
Her role as a project manager offered the variety Tara craved.
“Every day is different, and that’s what excites me about project management. You’re always learning, tackling multiple projects and adapting to different processes,” she explained. “My time at Herzing has helped me excel with the tools I use daily.”
The Flexibility of Online Learning: A Game-Changer
For someone managing both a full-time job and family responsibilities, flexibility was key to Tara’s educational success. Like many Herzing students, she found the university’s online programs a lifeline.
“Going to a traditional classroom wasn’t realistic for me,” Tara admitted. “I needed something flexible, and Herzing’s online structure allowed me to attend classes when it fits my schedule.”
Tara’s experience in Herzing’s online bachelor’s program was so positive that when she pursued her master’s degree in project management, she didn’t hesitate to return to Herzing.
“Herzing’s eight-week classes are fast-paced, which I appreciate. But even though it’s intense, the support system makes it manageable,” she said. “The professors, student advisors and tutoring services were all amazing. They helped me stay on track, especially when balancing work, family and school. Time management is critical in an online program, and I’m grateful for Herzing’s support.”
The Power of Mentorship: A Lifeline in Uncertain Times
One of the most significant turning points in Tara’s journey came through a mentoring relationship with Dr. Sandra Jolley, an associate professor at Herzing’s online degree programs department with more than 30 years of experience in project management. Tara’s connection with Dr. Jolley helped her navigate her coursework and opened doors to new career opportunities.
In 2024, Tara faced two layoffs in six months—an unexpected series of setbacks that would have derailed many people’s career plans. However, Dr. Jolley stepped in to provide emotional support and practical help.
“I was struggling after losing my job. I reached out to Dr. Jolley, asking for an extension on an assignment. She was incredibly understanding and even offered me more time than I had asked for,” Tara said, recalling how the support didn’t stop there. “During our one-on-one sessions, I connected with Dr. Jolley. She learned about my job search and without me asking, she wrote three different recommendation letters for me. Those letters were instrumental in helping me secure multiple interviews, that ultimately led to a new job.”
For Dr. Jolley, she has seen many students progress toward their degrees and believes her role—and that of all teachers—is to support their students both in the classroom and after they’ve graduated.
“Tara’s enthusiasm for learning and her ability to focus, especially in her writing, stood out right from the start,” said Dr. Jolley. “In project management, being able to write a focused project plan is critical—it’s like a contract. Tara excelled at that, and I wanted to support her even more.”
Tara’s story underscores the importance of networking and building relationships with professors and fellow students—advice she now shares with current and incoming Herzing students.
“Networking is critical. My connection with Dr. Jolley was invaluable. She went above and beyond to help me, and her recommendations were key in getting me hired,” Tara said. “I encourage all students to build those relationships. You never know where they might lead.”
Looking Ahead: Senior Leadership and Mentoring
As Tara continues her educational journey—on track to complete her master’s in project management by April 2025—her sights are set on bigger goals. She aims to earn her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and ascend to a senior leadership role where she can continue to help and mentor others.
For students considering Herzing University, Tara’s advice is simple: take advantage of the resources available to you.
“The resources Herzing offers, from professors to tutoring services, are there to help you succeed,” she emphasized. “And don’t be afraid to reach out. Building those connections with professors and classmates can make all the difference, not just in school, but in your career.”
