I started looking for schools when the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns were in full effect. As a result, I was looking for a completely online college experience, and that search led me to Herzing University. They were top-rated and had a Computer Programming course that seemed to suit my interests.
I‘ve always had a keen interest in computers and have been fascinated by just about everything they have to offer. While I already had a solid understanding of computer hardware, I wanted to also understand the software portion of these machines as well. After taking some time to consider my options, I dived into Herzing’s program. I’m so glad I made that choice – the program went great!
The faculty was awesome, and I want to give a shout-out to Professor Kurt Diesch specifically. He was an outstanding mentor for me during my time at Herzing University. Kurt is one of those professors you remember years later for encouraging you to be more ambitious. It’s rare to find mentors like that, and I hope he knows how much he helped me get to where I am.
It wasn’t all perfect, though. I ended up failing my Data Warehousing course the first time. It just wasn’t clicking with me for quite a while, and I refused to ask for help when I needed it. When it came time to retake it, I learned my lesson and consistently reached out whenever I was stuck. That was key to finding success and passing the course – it’s a life lesson I’m happy I learned!
Beyond the support I got from my teachers, Canvas was a valuable tool that kept me on track. Its awesome setup provided reminders when assignments were due, and that helped me quite a lot with my coursework. Speaking of which, all the courses were valuable to my learning! I can’t think of one that wasn’t important or informational.
Managing school while working was tough, but I discovered that I was good at time management. Thanks to that, I never felt like there was a massive crunch to get work done.
The best advice I can provide to those looking to earn their degree in computer programming would be to not just do the work, but utilize it to work on your projects. You’d be surprised how much actively using the materials you learn on your own time can help you. Good luck!
As a graduate, I am hoping to get into Front End Development with my Bachelor’s in Computer Science Programming! I’m so excited to start looking for opportunities.
