When Jarrell Green reflects on his educational path, it’s clear that life’s journey isn’t always a straight line. His story is one of grit, passion, and the belief that it’s never too late to transform your life—not only for yourself but for your family.

As a father of two and husband of 20 years, Jarrell describes himself as a 'late bloomer' who didn’t prioritize academics in high school. After graduating late and struggling in community college, he put his education on hold to focus on work and family.

During this time, Jarrell built a successful career in health and fitness. He became a personal trainer and taught kinesiology courses, which sparked his passion for education. But without a degree, he couldn’t advance to the next level in his career.

It’s Never Too Late to Go After What You Want

When Jarrell decided to earn his degree and expand his career opportunities, he applied to several schools—only to be turned away because of his low high school GPA from years ago. Then, one day, he saw an ad for Herzing University on the MARTA train in Atlanta. This moment was a turning point. Herzing recognized his passion and potential, and Jarrell was accepted into the Entrepreneurship Program, giving him what he calls “a second lease on life.”

Through Herzing’s career development services and network of employer partnerships, Jarrell was able to explore real-world business challenges that prepared him to advance his career. Once enrolled, he was determined to make the most of it. "I didn’t take that opportunity lightly—I cherished it,” he said.

Today, as a graduate and advisor, he encourages adult learners not to let age hold them back. “Employers don’t have age limits,” Jarrell will say, “It’s all about education and experience. Herzing’s motto, ‘I’m possible’ is something I want every student to think about. If you believe in yourself, you can achieve your goals.”

Jarrell’s message to other adult learners is clear: It’s never too late to go after what you want. Don’t let age, time, or missed opportunities hold you back—what matters is your determination to reach your goals.

The Power of a Strong Support System

Jarrell emphasizes the importance of a strong support system when balancing work, family, and education. He leaned on both his family and the Herzing community for motivation.

“I wanted to set an example for my kids,” Jarrell said. “I don’t feel comfortable telling my kids to do things or expecting certain things from them when I haven’t done it myself.”

But it wasn’t just his family that supported him—Herzing University became his extended support network. From day one, he found a close-knit community of faculty, advisors, and classmates ready to help him succeed. The convenience and flexibility of online courses, the support from professors and the additional free resources, like tutoring and career development services, made Jarrell feel seen, supported, and valued. That culture of care pushed him to keep going, even when the road got tough.

“Lean on your support system,” Jarrell encourages students. “When I was an undergrad, I worked seven days a week. I was teaching at a college, and I was a manager at a gym on weekends. I use myself as an example to say, ‘Hey, if I can do this, then you should be able to as well.’”

Thriving as a Student and Advisor at Herzing

Herzing gave Jarrell more than just a degree—it renewed his sense of purpose. He thrived in a supportive environment, building relationships with faculty and peers. “Herzing gave me pride, self-respect and confidence,” Jarrell shared enthusiastically.

Inspired by this experience, Jarrell became an advisor, helping other students navigate their educational journeys.

But Jarrell’s passion for education didn’t stop there. About a year after graduating, he realized he wasn’t done yet. His ambition to grow and pursue future leadership roles drove his decision to pursue his MBA.

When considering returning to school, “I thought, am I doing this again?” Jarrell said with a laugh. But thinking about his future and the opportunities an MBA would open up made the decision clear. “That was the motivation and mindset—knowing it was going to be worth it.” And choosing Herzing’s MBA program was an easy decision. “I love it here. If I want to advance, I want to do it here.”

Jarrell wears his love for Herzing proudly—both figuratively and literally, as he often sports the school’s logo. Herzing provides students with the tools and flexibility they need to succeed in today’s demanding job market. Programs are designed with working adults in mind, and Herzing’s commitment to career readiness is reflected in its partnerships with industry leaders and its focus on practical, hands-on learning.

For Jarrell, Herzing is more than a university—it’s a community that gave him the chance to dream bigger, aim higher and achieve more than he ever thought possible. He hopes his story inspires others to pursue their educational and career goals, no matter how winding their path has been.

“If you want to do it, nothing will stop you. I’m a firm believer in that.”
