Dr. Britney Snipes
My name is Dr. Britney Snipes, and I serve as lead faculty in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program. I have over 18 years of pediatric nursing experience including general peds, inpatient medical surgical, ICU, and outpatient specialty clinics. I also have over 13 years of nursing education experience serving as faculty for local and online nursing schools. I have a pediatric acute care certification (PNP-AC). I live in Northern Virginia about 35 miles from Washington DC. My husband and I have a 15-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. We are a busy family, running around with both kids for travel lacrosse, football, softball, and competitive gymnastics. We are an extremely active family (some may say aggressively competitive 🙂) but we enjoy traveling and trying new things.
What is a powerful moment that has stayed with you through your nursing career?
Early in my nursing career, I was working with a toddler. He was extremely fussy and crying for his mother. The patient’s temperament caused me to be a little nervous, to the point where I became unsure of myself. I remember the mom just coming over and taking the patient from my arms. This was a memorable moment for me because the toddler’s reaction caused me to lose my confidence even though I knew what I was doing. I realized then how important confidence is in healthcare, especially in pediatrics. I also learned never to doubt myself and to trust what I know and my experiences.
What is one piece of advice that you wish to share with nursing students?
I learned not to let anyone take away my confidence and I want students to feel the same way.
