Barbie Hendrick
A Dream Deferred, Not Denied
Barbie Hendrick's path to becoming a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) and co-owner of Agapé Physical Therapy in Dallas, Oregon, is a testament to perseverance. Her connection to physical therapy began at age 18, working in various clinic roles that sparked a passion for the field.
"If you would have asked me when I was 19 what I wanted to be, I would have told you I wanted to be a PT," Hendrick recalls. However, life had other plans.
Overcoming Challenges
In her early 20s, Hendrick faced a significant setback when she was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that temporarily derailed her career plans. But rather than abandon her healthcare dreams, she adapted. After recovery and moves across four different states, she found her way to Herzing University's Brookfield campus, where the PTA program offered the perfect blend of her passion and practicality.
Finding Her Path at Herzing
Seeking an accelerated program close to home, Hendrick discovered that Herzing University aligned perfectly with her goals. Her extensive background in PT clinic settings, combined with her personal experience as a patient, brought unique insight to her studies. A 2022 graduate, she transformed her years of healthcare experience into formal credentials through the Associate's Degree in Physical Therapist Assistance program.
Academic Excellence and Community Impact
During her time at Herzing, Hendrick's dedication shone through:
- Named Student of the Month in April 2022
- Earned Dean's List recognition every semester
- Engaged in community service, including a tree-planting project during her clinical rotation
- Maintained strong connections with faculty, even during out-of-state clinical placements
Learning Through Experience
The intimate learning environment at Herzing proved invaluable for Hendrick.
"It makes a world of difference to have in-person classes, especially when learning mobilizations or techniques," she reflects. "There is only so much that can be learned through a Zoom call."
Developing Professional Resilience
Perhaps due to her own journey of adaptation, Hendrick particularly values the resilience she developed at Herzing.
"It prepared me to always be ready for challenges and change," she says. "Makes life easier when you can roll with the punches, especially in a medical clinic setting."
From Student to Business Owner
Immediately after graduation, Hendrick's years of experience and newfound credentials culminated in not just employment as a PTA, but co-ownership of Agapé Physical Therapy. Her journey from clinic worker to business owner demonstrates how determination, combined with the right education, can transform career trajectories.
Lasting Connections
Despite relocating across the country, Hendrick maintains strong bonds with her classmates – a testament to the meaningful relationships formed during her time at Herzing. These connections, along with the practical skills gained through hands-on learning, continue to enrich her professional life.
