I was a funeral director and embalmer before I came to Herzing University, and I always wanted to pursue medical coding once I retired. Herzing proved to be the perfect fit for my lifestyle, and I already had a few credits in the medical field that would help ease the transition.
While everyone at Herzing has played a valuable role in helping me accomplish my career goals, I still had a couple of challenges to overcome. The biggest of them was, during week seven, I had to go into the hospital for a five-day EEG study to induce seizures for my brain tumor!
During this time, I was not allowed to leave my hospital bed without assistance and was taken off medication during the stay. I took all of my coursework with me and completed it in the hospital and attended Zoom meetings from a hospital bed!
I had also moved across the country during finals week, which was quite the challenge too! Thankfully, I was able to utilize my resources to manage these tough times and come out on top.
While I knew that the coursework was going to be difficult, I was surprised at how much there was to medical coding and billing that I never knew! During my journey, I learned not to be afraid to reach out when I get stuck. Everyone at Herzing will help you in every way that they can, and you are not alone in this! I’ve enjoyed my time here at Herzing and I appreciate all the help everyone has given me! It’s truly appreciated!
I have a job interview this coming week here in Tennessee and I’m looking forward to taking my CCA exam. I love working with people and helping in every way I can, and I’m so excited to finally get out there and get started on my future!
