Working in the information technology industry is all about staying up to date with advancements.
For Amon-Ra, a 2020 graduate from Herzing’s Atlanta campus, success means differentiating himself through his education and skills.
“If you have the same things that everyone else has, you’re just another face in the crowd,” Amon-Ra said. “I stay in tune with industry trends and then align my qualifications and my knowledge with those trends. I try my best to stand out from the next person.”
Amon-Ra found in Herzing a place that matches his passion for learning and career advancement.
“I first discovered Herzing when I was looking to enhance my skills through Cisco,” Amon-Ra said. “Herzing was one of the few schools that offered the curriculum and certifications that were right for me.
After receiving his diploma, Amon-Ra went on to get both his Bachelor’s degree in Software Development and his MBA in Technology Management at Herzing University.
“The labs drew me to Herzing because they’re so important to the IT industry,” Amon-Ra said. “They prepared me with the use of theory, which was then reinforced through the practical labs and application in projects.”
From there, he was able to grow and advance within the industry. He’s now working as a senior Lifecycle Ops Engineer.
“My degrees with Herzing allowed me to increase my earning potential as well as my qualifications,” Amon-Ra. “This resulted in obtaining roles with more compensation and responsibility.”
While he was advancing his education, he also found time to pursue passion projects. His time at Herzing inspired a business he now runs.
“I’ve always thought it would be nice to start a small coffee shop,” he said. “I was up late drinking coffee often while working through my classes at Herzing. At that point, I didn’t even like coffee. I thought it was horrible.”
However, after trying coffee on a trip to Zanzibar, Amon-Ra discovered that the coffee was enjoyably different. “I thought to myself, ‘this is what people should be drinking’,” Amon-Ra said. “I decided I wanted to introduce people to good coffee instead of what I had had before, and so I opened my own coffee business.”
Amon-Ra found that the motivating environment and education he received from Herzing helped bring his idea to life.
“It was through the MBA program at Herzing that I was able to create a business plan for this idea,” he said. “I do believe that without going through the program, I would’ve had a tremendously difficult time doing so.”
What’s next for Amon-Ra? We know it’ll be something exciting.
“I’m always trying, always working, always thinking,” he said.
