Joe Johnson
Finding His Way to Higher Education
Sometimes the best decisions come from unexpected sources. For Joe Johnson, his educational journey at Herzing University's New Orleans campus began with a colleague's encouragement – a simple conversation that would lead to two degrees and a transformed career path. Today, as Lead Repair Supervisor at a national tech company and Vice President of the Herzing-New Orleans Alumni Group, Joe exemplifies how the right educational environment can catalyze both professional success and community leadership.
Building a Foundation for Success
Joe's academic journey at Herzing was marked by determination and purpose, earning his Bachelor's in Business in 2020, followed by a Master's in 2022.
"Herzing pushed me to become a better student and leader at life," Joe reflects, crediting his department chairs for ensuring his success throughout both programs.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Herzing, Joe discovered that education extends far beyond academic achievements. One of his most valuable takeaways was mastering time management – a skill that proved crucial in both his studies and professional life.
"I had to learn to beat deadlines and plan accordingly to turn in the work on time," he shares, a lesson he now applies daily in his career.
A Champion for Community Music
While building his career in technology and business, Joe maintains deep roots in New Orleans' rich musical heritage. As a member of the NOLA Legacy Association of Bands, he dedicates his time to nurturing young musicians at MLK High School, helping build the next generation of New Orleans' musical community. This commitment to community service demonstrates how Herzing graduates often find unique ways to combine professional success with passionate community involvement.
Advocating for Personal Attention
For Joe, the value of a smaller university setting cannot be overstated.
"Smaller universities like Herzing matter and are a better experience for students," he emphasizes.
This perspective comes from firsthand experience with the personalized attention and support he received throughout his academic journey.
His advice to future students reflects the practical wisdom gained from his experience:
"Do your work on time," he stresses, adding, "If you are struggling, please reach out to your teachers – they do care."
He also emphasizes the importance of building and maintaining connections while remaining committed to continuous learning.
As Vice President of the Herzing-New Orleans Alumni Group, Joe continues to give back to the university community that helped shape his success. His journey from student to technology leader and community advocate showcases how Herzing's supportive environment and practical approach to education can empower students to achieve their professional goals while making a meaningful impact in their communities.
