AKRON, OH, (May 20, 2013) – Herzing University – Akron has just earned accreditation for its Dental Assisting programs from the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation, an important credential for graduates to earn the credentials needed for their careers.
Dental assisting is one of the fastest-growing careers with an increase of 31 percent more jobs expected from 2010 - 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Dental assistants play an important and growing role in today’s busy dental offices, working alongside dentists. The dental assistant’s work includes operating dental equipment, sterilizing instruments, taking and processing x-rays, applying cavity-preventing dental sealants to teeth, performing laboratory functions, coordinating treatment plans and providing patient education. They also frequently schedule and confirm appointments, maintain treatment records, handle patient payments and order supplies, which are important administrative functions in the dental office.
“Our dental assisting students are exceptionally well prepared to succeed in their careers, and we are thrilled to have achieved the accreditation necessary for them to sit for their Certified Dental Assisting exam when they complete their studies,” said David L. LaRue, Campus President, Herzing University – Akron. “As the healthcare industry continues to move toward having dental assistants play an even greater role in providing patient care, we are proud to provide high quality education and training for tomorrow’s dental assisting professionals.”
