Brian Kennedy came to Herzing University - Madison to learn the business of game design.
“I had a goal to start my own business and wanted to learn how to create something that I could sell. That’s why I chose to earn a degree in game development,” explains Brian. “Herzing University taught me the business side of game design, as well as the creative. I learned that the gaming industry doesn’t work like a typical business. It’s not all fun and games. There is a scientific art to it all.”
After graduating in 2011 with a bachelor of science in game development, Brian used what he learned about the gaming industry to start his own company 608games.com. He credits Herzing for not only giving him the skills and knowledge to start his own game development company, but the confidence to do it.
“Herzing wants you to succeed, and the faculty and staff will do anything they can to support your goals,” says Brian. “The support system at Herzing made a big difference for me. The faculty were always available to help me. They made me feel like I really mattered.”
Brian also appreciates the opportunities he had to learn from faculty with game design experience, and network with other students and industry experts.
“At Herzing, we collaborated across departments and degree areas to learn from each other.
But what surprised me the most was that I was rubbing shoulders with people who could have a major impact on me and my career,” says Brian. “I started my company because of the connections I made at Herzing.”
Brian was so pleased with his experience as an undergraduate that he came back to Herzing to earn an MBA in business management. He wanted to gain management skills and knowledge that he could apply immediately to his own company.
“I’ve already taken what I’ve learned in the MBA program and implemented new ways of engaging my employees in the decision making and creative process. Morale has improved and we’re getting some great creative input,” Brian says.
Brian is excited about the future of his company and is confident that it will continue to grow. “Thanks to Herzing, I know that if I work hard I can achieve anything.”
