Course Description:

This course is designed to prepare the licensed dental assistant to properly apply pit and fissure sealants in the dental practice.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain how sealants work.
  2. Recognize anatomic landmarks on the teeth that influence sealant placement.
  3. Explain the different kinds of sealant material.
  4. Identify indications and contraindications for the placement of sealants.
  5. State the criteria for an ideal sealant.
  6. Identify the composition of the etching agent.
  7. Describe the procedure for the application of the etching material.
  8. Identify etching times for primary, permanent, and flourosed teeth.
  9. Determine the armamentarium needed to place sealants.
  10. Practice infection control and moisture control guidelines when placing sealants.
  11. Demonstrate the placement of sealants in the laboratory setting.
  12. Demonstrate the placement of sealants in the clinical setting.
  13. Perform a self evaluation of the success of sealant placement.
  14. Educate patients about sealants.
